Voki Avatars

Exploring Voki Avatars for the first time was a very exciting experience for me. I loved how there was such a variety of elements to choose from such as gender, clothing, facial aspects, species and bling. The Voki website is easy to navigate through and makes creating an avatar incredibly easy. Pedagogically, I believe that the digital voki avatar would be a great tool to engage students within a classroom as it would be highly amusing for them to see a cartoon character talking and giving them instructions rather then the teacher. The tool could be used for a variety of KLA's and has potential to create a dull topic into an engaging lesson. The avatar creation process is quick and easy which ensures that once discovered, teachers will continue to use the tool throughout their teaching career. I believe that the Voki Avatar tool will benefit my teaching style and will be useful within the classroom. If students were to use the tool themselves, time would need to be set aside for them to play with the program before any learning or teaching could occur. I believe that digital Avatars will support the learning of all students, espesically kinaesthetic learners, and will be a great tool for shy students that find it difficult to speak up in class. As seen on moodle, Voki Avatars work well on websites and I plan on using them in my virtual classrooms to add a human element for the students. The fact that the avatars talk to the students may encourage less interested students to log into the virtaul classroom in their own time, as they know that they will not have to read a load of writing to complete their tasks. The ICT tool is one aspect of technology that will help to improve lessons and keep students interested.
